How did your decision to return to the workforce after being a full-time mom lead you to a role where you could directly impact Hawai‘i’s technological and community development?
Every stage of life brings its own unique challenges, especially for women who wear so many hats. When I made the choice to step away from my career to be a full-time mom, I knew that when the time came to return to work, I wanted it to be in a role that truly mattered. So, when the opportunity at HTDC, a state agency under DBEDT, came knocking, I saw it as a chance to give back to a state that has given me so much, to contribute directly to the well-being and livelihood of our community and ‘āina.
Technology, science, and innovation play such a crucial role in our daily lives today, and they are constantly evolving at a rapid pace. Being in this capacity gives me the opportunity to drive the positive change that Hawai‘i so urgently needs, making it more resilient and sustainable.
It’s been an incredible journey, but I won’t deny there are times when it feels frustrating. Even when solutions exist, there are so many unnecessary hurdles to navigate. But I remain dedicated to my goals and continue striving for the greater good, no matter the challenges. It’s important to keep our eyes on the bigger picture and keep pushing forward for change to happen.
If you ever get the opportunity to hear Earl Nightingale’s Acres of Diamonds, you’ll discover its core message serves as a powerful reminder: the potential for success, happiness, and fulfillment is often already present in our current situation. Instead of pursuing far-off opportunities or yearning for the unattainable, we should turn our attention inward and value the resources, abilities, and possibilities that surround us. True wealth and opportunity are not defined by our location but by how we perceive and utilize what we already have.
What are some turning points in your career that helped you succeed?
As a first-generation immigrant from Southeast Asia who has made Hawai‘i my home, I’ve faced a multitude of turning points—both positive and negative—that have shaped who I am today. One of the most pivotal moments was when I was offered my first job in Hawai‘i 23 years ago. This opportunity not only allowed me to apply my skills in a global setting but also helped me build a network of supportive colleagues and mentors who have been instrumental in my growth.
Much of my success is thanks to the incredible people who have stood by me through thick and thin, offering guidance, encouragement, and friendship. Relationships matter immensely and nurturing them every day is something I deeply value. It’s the connections we make and the support we receive that often help us overcome challenges to achieve our goals.
Being a part of a community, both professionally and personally, has enriched my life and career in countless ways. I strive to pay it forward by supporting others on their journeys, especially our young keiki, who are our hopes for a better tomorrow. It’s these connections and the support we receive that help us overcome challenges and achieve our goals. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of giving back to the community and contributing to the growth and well-being of others.
As Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
What is your go-to song or playlist that gets you motivated for a busy day?
I don’t have a specific playlist, but Michael Bublé is my jam—his music is like a cozy blanket for my soul. However, I had a good laugh when my friend’s 8-year-old introduced me to a song titled UMA. So now, thanks to a pint-sized music aficionado, I’ve got a new tune stuck in my head!
If you could swap jobs with anyone in the world for one day who would that be and why?
Hmm, if I could trade jobs with anyone in the world for a day, I think I’d stick with what I’m doing. But if I could work alongside anyone, it would definitely be Catherine, Princess of Wales. Her commitment to mental health advocacy, her impactful charity work, and her genuine ability to connect with people from all walks of life are truly inspiring. She embodies both strength and compassion, a remarkable role model. Working alongside her would be an incredible opportunity to learn and contribute to causes that really matter.
Each one of us brings something unique and valuable to our communities. The diversity of experiences and perspectives is what fuels positive change. Be confident in your ability to be a changemaker.
In a workplace that demands your utmost, what do you do for self-care?
I find comfort in simplicity and cherish the quiet moments spent at my home in Mānoa, which I call my “cave.” It’s my sanctuary where I can relax, breathe, and simply be still. The tranquility helps me recharge and maintain balance. As a mom that’s constantly running around managing my 10- and 11-year-old boys, my gas tank has to be always full and therefore my quiet moments are so precious to me.
